Dr. Sam Wasdworth, Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Aspect Biosystems, makes his investment pitch to an audience of investors at INVEST in BC 2016. INVEST IN BC 2016 brought together stakeholders in the healthcare innovation ecosystem in an exciting day of innovative pitches. Entrepreneurs told their stories and got feedback and engagement from a wide range of investor stakeholders. Investors ranged from angel investors, venture capital, corporate venture and foundations.

Executive recruiters from Lock Search Group and the HR Director from Neovasc discussed their hiring concepts and beliefs on attracting life sciences talent to British Columbia. Also included in the discussion was Paul Drohan’s experience as Senior Global VP, Genzyme in managing and recruiting large and experienced teams.

This Blakes event focused on biopharma innovation and the years invested in clinical research and the millions directed at new medicine discovery. Amgen identified their R&D investment in Canada, including the clinical research invested in B.C., in excess of 85M CDN. For the years invested in clinical discovery, the end result for both Amgen and DelMar, is their proud record of achievement in trying to manage better health outcomes for those with grievous diseases.

The meeting generated a fulsome discussion on economic immigration with a focus on capturing a larger capacity of highly educated and skilled life science talent to work in B.C. Given as a discussion point was the combining of academic disciplines such as Bio Engineering, to manage the long term sustainability of the sectors growth and prosperity in BC.

LifeSciences BC organized a team mission in collaboration with One Nucleus and timed to the Genesis Conference to visit Oxford, Cambridge and London. Objectives: 1. Engage with the world’s leading universal healthcare system to explore possible initiatives that can be initiated/transferred into the BC healthcare system, e.g. “Test Beds in the NHS” 2. Explore and understand the benefits of the positive working relationship with between UK Government and Industry, e.g. Office of Life Sciences, CATAPULTS, BioCatalyst Fund, etc. 3. Understand the data availability to the private sector through an engagement with the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) 4. Explore how BC companies can use the UK as their EU base through the development of relationships with potential collaborators, services providers and health regulators.
