LifeSciences BC was pleased to host Dr. Brian Day, Co-Owner & Medical Director of the Cambie Surgery Centre as the keynote speaker for our December 4 Blakes Breakfast Speaking Event on Health Policy. Dr. Day addressed health care innovation from the perspective of the private care model.Before the keynote presentation, Dr. Ali Farahani, Medical Director of Preventum, provided the community with details on his organization’s work. As well, Monica Gervais, Senior Manager, International Trade Policy, in the B.C. Ministry of International Trade shared details and expected opportunities of the recently concluded Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

LifeSciences BC was pleased to host Alexei Marko, CEO & Director of Neovasc Inc. as the keynote speaker for our November Blakes Breakfast Speaking Series Event on Medical Devices. Alexei shared the first-in-man mitral valve replacement done at St. Paul’s Hospital and his experience of moving from pre-clinical work into first human implantations.

Seminar on Building New Value Chains for Nanotechnologies for Health in Flanders

At this seminar, Pascal Verdonck, Prof. Biomedical Engineering at Ghent University, Dr. Omer Saka, Direcrtor Health Economy & Market Access Strategy at Deloitte Belgium and Dr. Peter Simkens, Managing Director of DSP Valley shared their insights on medical devices in the Flanders region and how these companies work closely together in order to provide accurate and complete information for investors.

LifeSciences BC hosts delegation from the Chinese Henan Medical Device Association

LifeSciences BC, in conjunction with the Government of British Columbia, was pleased to host a delegation of Henan Medical Device Association members consisting of medical devices senior executives for a full-day event. The 21 delegates, representing 13 companies, were in town to explore collaboration and investment opportunities with medical devices companies in British Columbia.

At the event, AdvantageBC, McCarthy Tatrault, the Ministry of International Trade and the Canada China Business Council presented on various legal, tax-based, and cultural aspects of doing business in the Province, while other LifeSciences BC members gave company-specific presentations.

The day ended with a Networking Reception where LifeSciences BC members, the Government of British Columbia and the delegation companies were able to discuss their interest in smaller groups. The attendees confirmed their interest in strengthening this relationship and following up to discuss business collaboration and investment opportunities.

Information Session on NRC’s Human Health Therapeutics and Medical Devices Portfolios

LifeSciences BC and the National Research Council of Canada were pleased to host this information session on collaborative opportunities with NRC’s Human Health Therapeutics and Medical Devices Portfolios.

As an R&D partner of choice, the National Research Council Canada’s Life Sciences division de-risks critical steps in the development of biologics, vaccines and medical devices by adding value to collaborators products and accelerating the progress to market by overcoming challenges along the value chain.
At this information session, representatives of the National Research Council Canada outlined details of their initiatives in bioprocessing and delivery of large molecules to the brain, as well as showcased some of their industrial projects and the impacts they are generating for the Canadian life sciences sector.

Dr. Rose shared his insight on co-founding the first commercial quantum computing company, and how this technology can be used in health care today.

On June 11, LifeSciences BC was pleased to host Doug Crawford, Assistant Director with QB3, the California Institute of Quantitative Biosciences, for a roundtable discussion with industry thought leaders, a presentation for our community followed by a wine and cheese networking reception.

On April 23, 2014, LifeSciences BC hosted its 16th annual awards dinner. Approximately 500 senior business and research leaders celebrated our community’s successes in the past year. Hosted by Bob McDonald of CBC’s Quirks & Quarks, the Vancouver Convention Centre was filled with energy and excitement. British Columbia’s life sciences sector has made significant achievements recently, and our annual awards dinner recognized the outstanding individuals and companies that have contributed to make the Province one of the top biotech clusters in North America.

Have you ever considered having your personal genome analyzed?

Today, genome services are providing consumers with the ability to have our personal genetic information analyzed and the results detailed to us. As personalized genetics provides us with more options around our health and lifestyle decisions, how will it change how our health professionals and the health care system tailor our care?

LifeSciences BC hosted a breakfast event with three speakers exploring this topic:

  • Dr. James Taylor, CEO of Precision NanoSystems Inc., discussed how their lead products solve the challenge of using genome sequencing data to develop new personalized medicines
  • Dr. Brad Popovich, Chief Scientific Officer from Genome British Columbia, gained insight into his personal genome working with Illumina, and the decisions that came with this new knowledge
  • Dr. Steven Jones, Associate Director and Head, Bioinformatics, Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, BC Cancer Agency, discussed how his organization is already using personal genomic data to tailor current and future treatments

LifeSciences BC and the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program were pleased to host this workshop on medical funding opportunities with the U.S. Department of Defense. Dave Hood, a former advisor to the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command, provided an overview of funding opportunities for B.C. companies.

LifeSciences BC welcomed the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women Canada. At the event, Dr. Leitch announced a new, three-year project furthering a national mentoring program to connect professional women, executives and students in the bio-economy across Canada, investing $231,385 into the program.
