Medical Funding Opportunities in the U.S. Department of Defense

November 13, 2012

On November 13, LifeSciences BC and the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program hosted Medical Funding Opportunities in the U.S. Department of Defense. We were pleased to welcome Mr. Dave Hood, a former advisor to the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command who outlined the numerous opportunities for funding available to B.C. companies.

The U.S. Department of Defense has been expressing a need for increased research and development yielding medical devices and pharmaceuticals that help address issues experienced by soldiers returning from duty. Many times, the DoD is overlooked by medical device and pharmaceutical companies as a source of investment. A small number of device and pharmaceutical companies have successfully pursued and captured significant funding, which in some cases has included more than $30 million in non-dilutive government funding over several years of product development. In recent months the military medical community, as well as the National Institutes for Health, have begun increasing the available funds and effort in later stage medical device development, production and clinical trials.

Following the workshop, approximately 20 companies had the opportunity for a one-on-one consultation with Mr. Hood to discuss their technologies and find out the best route for them to apply for funding.

This event was the first installment of a four-part series for our Discovery Foundation BC Excels Program. Thanks to support from the Discovery Parks Foundation, three more sessions will take place in the next six to eight months, and will include IP and finance, clinical regulatory affairs and sales and marketing.
