Academic and Research Institutions
The Life Sciences Institute (LSI) is an innovative multi-faculty, multi-department research institute. The goals of the LSI are: to uncover the underlying mechanisms of cells by advancing our understanding of disease processes, identifying potential therapeutic targets, and by developing ways to remove toxins and pathogenic organisms from the environment; to generate and sustain innovative, interdisciplinary research around discovering fundamental biological processes of life; and to equip the next generation of students with skills that can be used in health, environmental, and related fields and be adapted for use in other essential occupations in the global workplace.
Membership includes 87 Principal Investigators (PIs) from 10 departments in the faculties of Medicine and Science, organized into eight interdisciplinary, interdepartmental, theme-based research groups. Researchers work in open-concept labs. The organizational structure promotes collaborative projects, increased communication across disciplines, and economical use of shared equipment. The total number of LSI research and support staff is more than 850, including more than 260 graduate students, 90 post-docs, 62 research associates, 277 research staff, more than over 100 undergraduates.
The LSI is a superb training environment for undergraduate, medical, graduate, and post-graduate students, offering many interdisciplinary research opportunities in Science and Medicine research labs. LSI undergraduate students gain hands-on experience in a broad range of world-class research labs, using state of the art technology. The LSI is also home to students enrolled in 12 different life science graduate programs, both departmental and interdisciplinary, including the new program in Cell and Developmental Biology. The LSI is also home to the Life Sciences Post-doc Club, which promotes the interests and careers of emerging post-graduate research scientists.
LSI Research Groups focus on eight major themes: blood research; cardiovascular systems; diabetes; cell and developmental biology; molecular epigenetics; infection immunity and inflammation; chemical biology; and bacterial regulatory networks.
