Protox Therapeutics Inc. is a product-focused development-stage company advancing novel, targeted protein toxin therapeutics for treatment of cancer and other proliferative diseases. The company’s PORxinTM platform is based on an engineered version of a naturally-occurring pore-forming protein called proaerolysin. Product candidates generated using the PORxinTM platform are inactive prodrugs that are activated at the disease site into potent toxins by disease specific proteases, thereby causing cell death. PRX302, the company’s lead product candidate for localized prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a first-in-class pore-forming targeted toxin for cancer therapy.PRX302 received FDA clearance to begin a Phase I clinical trial for the treatment of localized prostate cancer in January. In May, Protox successfully enrolled and dosed their first patient for the Phase I clinical study. The company is also developing PRX302 for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is scheduled to enter Phase I trials in H2, 2006.
