The BC BioLibrary

What is a BioLibrary?
A BioLibrary is a collection of information and resources and is a conduit for access to human biological materials. It is organized to provide access to a target group (Research Biobanks, Clinical Trials, Research Studies), with a staff that is trained to provide services and programs related to the needs of the target group.

The BC BioLibrary is a Technology / Methodology Platform funded by the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSHFR) since 2007 to establish an essential provincial, cross-cutting technology and methodology platform to support biobanking and a broad range of health research applications that utilize biospecimens, across institutions and research teams. The mandate is to enhance health research across BC and increase its national and international competitiveness.

The BC BioLibrary is not a biobank and does not perform research. The BC BioLibrary facilitates the appropriate access to biospecimens for biobanks and researchers. Biobanks are defined in this context as research using biospecimens and associated health data and encompass a spectrum that includes individual laboratory research studies, formal research biobanks, and biospecimen collections associated with epidemiology studies or clinical trials.

The BC BioLibrary will acquire, organize, and distribute human biospecimens to diverse biobanks (research studies, research banks, and clinical trial banks). As a ‘fuel injection’ system for biobanking, the BC BioLibrary will improve the ability to collect critically important biospecimens, including frozen tissue, with emphasis on standardized collection and annotation. It will enhance access to prospective and archival materials essential for clinical trials, drug discovery, biomedical imaging technologies, proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, and population-based outcome initiatives, and pertinent educational applications. Establishing the BC BioLibrary will ensure commitment to transparency and accountability to the public and optimal use and maximal benefits of these precious gifts given for research to advance health.

Biobanking and the use of high quality biospecimens continues to be a critical aspect of translational research, however, formal training is rarely available. The BC BioLibrary platform is currently developing an education and training program addressing multiple aspects of biobanking.
