B.C. plan requiring people to switch to cheaper drugs costs more, study says
VANCOUVER, B.C. — British Columbia's drug coverage plan has cost the
province more money than it was supposed to save while worsening
patients' health because of a policy that forces them to take cheaper
medication for conditions such as acid reflux, says a new study. Dr.
James Gray, a gastroenterologist who co-authored the study, said
Thursday the plan that came into effect in 2003 is a failed experiment
that put unrealized cost savings ahead of patients' quality of life.
But Health Minister George Abbott disputed the study, saying its
methodology is flawed and that other research suggests the government's

Burnaby, B.C. -- Finance Minister Jim Flaherty in his letter to the
editor (Conservative Research Funding - Feb. 18) fails to mention a
critical fact: The operating budgets for the three federal granting
councils are being slashed by $150-million over the next three years
(after three years of Conservative funding increases, mostly targeted,
that barely kept up with inflation). While it is true that there are
significant one-time-only investments in science and technology, none
are of a sort required to sustain the continuing operations of the only
federal agencies that support basic research in Canada... read more
New Requirement for Manufacturers of Electrical Medical Devices from the Province of Ontario
The Electrical Safety Authority has issued a list of Frequently Asked Questions for manufacturers. Beginning April 1, 2009, ESA has mandated that all manufacturers who currently sell electrical products in Ontario, Canada, or are planning to sell, must be registered with ESA. Read more
