Featured Members:

LightIntegra Technology Inc.

LightIntegra Technology Inc. is an emerging medical device company.

LightIntegra¹s ThromboLUX technology measures the entire spectrum of particles in blood plasma that tells the story of the donor¹s health or the quality of a platelet or plasma product for transfusion. Particle types such as platelets, microparticles and bacteria each have a characteristic profile. Fast, simultaneous access to platelet and microparticle profiles through LightIntegra¹s ThromboLUX technology provides clinical information that can save lives. In North America approximately 3 million platelet transfusions, each worth about $500, are administered annually to cancer, heart surgery and bleeding patients. Of these transfusions 10-30% are not effective and up to 25% cannot be used before they expire after only 5 days of shelf life. LightIntegra's optical ThromboLUX test can address and significantly reduce both problems.

The Prevention of Organ Failure Centre of Excellence (PROOF Centre)

The Prevention of Organ Failure Centre of Excellence (PROOF Centre) discovers, develops and commercializes biological markers (biomarkers) to diagnose, prevent and treat heart, lung and kidney failure. The PROOF Centre is a unique multi-disciplinary hub of partners from industry, academia, government, health care, patients and the public. The PROOF Centre’s “personalized medicine” approach — giving the right person, the right treatment, at the right time, in the right amount — will reduce the enormous burden of organ failure and improve health.

The PROOF Centre is a not-for-profit society established in 2008 by competi¬tive funding from the Networks of Cen¬tres of Excellence’s “Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research” (CECR) program.

The PROOF Centre’s host institution is the University of British Columbia. Its administrative centre is anchored in the Providence Heart + Lung Institute at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Co¬lumbia. The operational facilities for the PROOF Centre, including patient cohorts, information management and technol¬ogy platforms, are situated in Vancouver, elsewhere in British Columbia, Alberta and around the world.

The PROOF Centre is led by Drs. George Schreiner (Chair of the Board), Bruce McManus (Director) and Michael Hayden (Chair Translational Advisory Committee).

The PROOF Centre strives to:
  • Discover, validate, qualify and implement biomarkers for prediction, diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic guidance for patients with organ failure;
  • Identify and develop novel, promis¬ing technologies to help bridge the commercialization gap;
  • Develop a better understanding of disease risks;
  • Create new opportunities to allow for growth and development of the local biotechnology community; and
  • Provide biomarker discovery and development expertise, management of validation trials, single-point access to cohorts and technology platforms.
