VANTEC-Life Science Angel Network Presentation Opportunities
November 4th,2008 through May 5th, 2009
Angel investors are accomplished entrepreneurs who make investments in
early stage companies. These investors truly wish to see young
companies succeed and often provide mentoring advice as well as
capital. Local Angel investors began to meet as the Vancouver Angel
Technology Network (VANTEC) in 1999. Three years later, the
VANTEC-Life Science Angel Network (LSAN) was formed to focus investor
activities on young companies in the life and health sciences. Since
then, the life/health LSAN and the non-life/health VANTEC have
alternated the first Tuesday of each month to introduce early stage
investors and mentors to promising technology companies.
The 30 to 40 Angels attending each LSAN are interested and
knowledgeable about the life and health sciences industry. Members are
encouraged to invite other angels as the major advantage of this angel
network is that its members are peers who share ideas, assessment and
co-investing opportunities.
Presenting companies can opt for one of two formats:
1. Full 10-Minute Presentation – The company makes a 10-minute
presentation followed by a 5-minute Q&A. The purpose of the Full
Presentation is to garner enough interest to obtain subsequent private
meetings with the investors. The company must have an angel sponsor
(i.e. a current or potential angel investor) who introduces the company
and also collects and manages the feedback after the company’s
10-minute presentation. The company must present to the pre-screening
panel which meets approximately 2 weeks prior to the angel meeting.
2. 5-Minute Snapshot – For companies who have presented before and
who wish to provide an Update of their activities since their last
presentation to the angel investors; or for new presenters who would
like to use this 5-minute Preview to introduce their business
opportunity and/or to seek mentoring help. There is no Q&A. There
is no need for an angel sponsor. There is no pre-screening process.
Since its inception, almost half of the companies who have presented to
these angel investors have received financing. According to a 2006
study by Rocket Builders, the mean amount of angel investment reported
by a past presenting company was $250,000. About 20% of these
companies go on to secure venture capital; the total amount raised from
these institutional funds exceeded $200 million.

There is no cost to the entrepreneur as the VANTEC and the VANTEC-LSAN
are generously supported by volunteers and sponsors Fasken Martineau
DuMoulin, Ernst & Young, Corporate Recruiters, Technology
Incentives, SFU and Rocket Builders.
