National Biotechnology Week Concludes with Greatest Number of Attendees Ever

The Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy Comes to Vancouver

LifeSciences BC, along with BIOTECanada and BIO, was a proud co-host of
this Summit. With a total of 500 total registrants from 20 countries,
nearly half of which were Canadian, double the number of exhibitors and

LifeSciences BC's Medical Device Seminar Series Provides Latest Updates from Chinese Healthcare Market

This seminar featured the latest facts, figures and success stories about the world's fastest growing healthcare market presented by a team of experts who flew in for this event. Attendees were given an overview of China's life sciences sector, Chinese medical regulations, Intellectual Property Protection, and Tax Law. Held in cooperation with the China division of Reed Exhibition, this seminar will also provide information on an upcoming mission to Hong Kong and mainland China in April 2009 culminating in the China Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF) which takes place in Shenzhen every April. Biotechnology 101 Educates Community on Underpinning Science of our Industry

LifeSciences BC was pleased to once again offer this very popular series taught by Dr. Paul Barran. This two-day course introduces the science of biotechnology and biomedical devices to non-scientists who may have an interest in or may be new to the industry. The course also serves as a great refresher for those whose scientific education may have been some time ago. Offered by LifeSciences BC several times a year, this course can also be offered at additional times if enough requests are received for additional offerings. Exhibit space at BIO 2009 in Atlanta next year is already filling up,
so BC organizations wishing to exhibit at the conference need to act
immediately. Due to the immense resources required to mount a
provincial pavilion, LifeSciences BC is refocusing our participation at
BIO next year and will not be coordinating a British Columbia Pavilion,
but organizations are still offered the opportunity to exhibit within
the Canadian pavilion should they not delay. Read more

recent FDA regulatory updates. Two experienced specialists, Martha
Feldman and Bruce Haggar, delivered the most current updates ranging
from pre-marketing regulatory affairs, and 510(K) submission, to
combined products (drug/biotech-device; device-device) and quality

For the first time ever, LifeSciences BC hosted a Med
Devices Mingler after the seminar. This networking reception provided a
great opportunity for medical device companies to connect with their
peers and LifeSciences BC’s broader membership as well. Held at the
popular Saltlik Steakhouse, members took the opportunity to unwind

The 2008/09 SABC program was launched on October 16, 2008! LifeSciences
BC was pleased to be hosted by the BC Cancer Agency for this event.
Attending students enjoyed presentations from industry and potential
mentors, as well as learned about biotechnology and how they can
contribute to scientific understanding.

The cornerstone of the sabc program is to provide students the
opportunity to work with scientist mentors in real labs on real
projects. To make this happen the program needs mentors to help the
high school student teams develop and execute their projects. Programs
such as sabc are really important tools for developing the next

The sanofi-aventis BioTalent Challenge is a high-school competition
held nationwide that brings together creative and curious young people
interested in solving a problem using biotechnology. LifeSciences British Columbia is proud to be the lead organizer for the sanofi-aventis biotech challenge in BC. The competition offers a total of $10,000 shared between the winning
students and their schools. This event will also feature presenters
from the local scientific community, showcasing their careers and
