UBC scholars spawn business ideas

VANCOUVER - The University of B.C. chalked up its first spin-off company in 1976, and there have been 129 start-ups since.
Some have turned out to be spectacular successes, others flamed brightly before sinking into the shadows and yet others are still struggling to win support for innovations and inventions in everything from biotech to green tech.
The university and its staff and students can lay claim to a diverse range of accomplishments - from putting Canada on the Web map with the dot-ca domain name, to life-saving drug treatments and planet-saving environmental advances. Read more.
VICTORIA - Provincial funding announcements usually attract a few media
outlets and a selection of the parties affected by the actual funding.
It's not often members of the public feel the desire to squeeze into
small rooms with open microphones.
But for Jean-Paul Paterlini, Friday's announcement of $50 million in
funding for Genome B.C. was motivation enough to drive down from
Cowichan Bay, as the money will help fuel research into something close

Canadian biotech: a profile of our northern neighbor

Canada is fertile ground for biotech. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to visit frequently Toronto, occasionally Montreal, Edmonton (once), but had always wanted to go to Canada's West Coast and see Vancouver. Opportunity presented itself recently at a request by Illinois' Office of Trade and Investment (OTI), a division of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, to present Illinois' growing bioscience business to the British Columbia Life Science Association. Centre for Drug Research and Development attracts a significant partner to bring B.C. researchers' discoveries from lab bench to commercial development
Vancouver, BC - February 4, 2008 – Pfizer Canada is committing $1 million to the Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) to create the "Pfizer-CDRD Innovation Fund". This innovation fund aims to fast-track the commercialization of some of B.C.'s most promising academic research projects into high-value medicines that form the basis for new companies or licensing opportunities.
