Manufacturing Partnership Opportunity for the Production of Pacing Leads

The Consulate General of Canada in Minneapolis has been invited to assist Medtronic Inc. of Fridley, Minnesota in identifying a potential outsource manufacturing partner in Canada for the production of pacing leads. A pacing lead relays a pacing pulse from a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator to the heart. The lead may also relay information about the heart’s electrical activity back to the implanted device. Medtronic (www.medtronic.com) offers many different pacing lead models, some delivering active ingredients (drugs). A physician will choose a lead that fits the needs of an individuals body: the size and structure of veins and the heart’s size, structure, and muscular condition.

One of six Medtronic's business divisions, CRM is responsible for $6 billion of Medtronic's $12 billion annual revenues. Other business lines include cardio vascular, neuromodulation/spinal/ENT surgery, ophthalmic, diabetes and guided surgery.

Given the medical/legal liability issues involved and quality assurance requirements of the implanted medical devices with drug delivery capabilities, the ideal Canadian outsourcing partner must have a demonstrated track record in drug/medical device manufacturing (experience), is cGMP compliant (quality assurance), has polymer moulding knowledge, preferably has an FDA registration and the capacity to produce approximately 1-2 million moulded pacing lead components per year.
