BC Biotech and JETRO Vancouver Host Visit from Takeda Research Investment, Inc.
BC Biotech in partnership with JETRO Vancouver was pleased to organize a partnering day with Takeda Research Investment, Inc. (TRI) on November 14th. Dr. Yuji Iizawa, Senior Vice President and Dr. Hiroya Muranishi, Manager of Scientific Evaluation visited Vancouver and met with six of our member organizations to discuss partnerships and investment opportunities.
TRI is the corporate venture arm of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (TPC) a world-class pharmaceutical company and the largest in Japan. Formed in 2002, TRI identifies and supports the development of new therapeutic drug discovery opportunities of biopharmaceutical companies and academic centers of excellence. They do this by investing in pharmaceutical technology and product concepts worldwide.
TRI is based in Palo Alto, California and is actively seeking global investment opportunities. Their goal is to place $100 million in investments during the next 4-5 years, with an immediate emphasis on cardiovascular, central nervous system, metabolic and oncology therapeutic domains. The scope of the fund does not include diagnostics, devices, gene therapy or anti-infective products.
TRI's visit to British Columbia consisted of meetings and site visits with our organizations focusing their efforts in the therapeutics listed above, and included the Centre for Drug Research & Development, Allon Therapeutics, The Diabetes Group, Neuromed Pharmaceuticals, Somapath Pharmaceuticals and Welichem Biotech Inc.
In October, Xenon Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company located in Burnaby, and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited announced an exclusive agreement to develop and commercialize oral formulations of Xenon’s lead product for pain, XEN401, in Japan and certain Asian countries. In the coming months, we hope to see that the meetings with TRI lead to similar agreements and partnerships between the Japanese firm and our local biotech companies.
Dr. Iizawa and Dr. Muranishi were very impressed with our companies and their technologies, and will be returning to BC during BioPartnering North America. BC Biotech looks forward to welcoming them again at the conference in February, and for additional follow-up in the coming months.
BC Biotech would like to thank JETRO Vancouver and UBC UILO for their assistance in organizing this very successful partnering day.
