BC Host Committee Organizes Omics Mission in Vancouver

The Canadian Consulate in Raleigh, NC, and the Canadian Consulate General in Atlanta, GA, recently organized a Mission from the southeastern USA focused on ‘omics’ technologies, nanotechnology and their convergence.  This Omics-Nano Mission also visited British Columbia and Alberta from June 4th to 9th.

The primary purpose of the Mission was to foster Canadian-US business alliances as well as collaborative research and development in both nanotechnology and the “omics” area (including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and bioinformatics) as well as in the convergence of nanotechnology and biotechnology.  This was an Enhanced Representative Initiative (ERI) and the ERI Partners for this Mission were the National Research Council Canada and Western Economic Diversification Canada.

The Vancouver portion of the Mission was organized by a BC Host Committee comprised of representatives from BC Biotech, Genome BC, BCCA, Nano BC, International Trade Canada, NRC-IRAP, and Western Economic Diversification.  The Mission took place at Genome BC and BC Cancer Agency.   Some of the session topics focused on Drug Development and Medical Devices; Nano, Omics and Drug Delivery; Bio Business and Cancer Genomics.   In particular, Gowlings gave an insightful presentation on the "Current Issues in IP Protection of Genomics, Proteomics & Nanotechnology".

The Mission was a success and the mission participants left British Columbia with a better understanding of our technologies, our industry and the opportunities in BC.

BC Biotech Participates in the 2nd California-Strategic Innovation Partnership Summit

The 2nd California-Strategic Innovation Partnership Summit was held in Vancouver BC from June 11th to 12th.  The Summit brought together leaders from research, business and government from jurisdictions in California and Canada.  The event inaugurated the bilateral research, development and delivery partnerships presently organized between the two regions and provided the framework for a major partnership.

Participants of the Summit were focused on two key goals:

1) To strategically focus research cooperation between California and Canada; and
2) To pursue new approaches to more effectively transfer knowledge and skills to the private sector.

The two-day Summit consisted of sessions and working groups who covered the following topics:  Infectious Disease, Highly Qualified Human Resources, Nanotechnology, Venture Capital, and Advanced Transportation & Energy.   Although there were  lengthy discussions in all these areas, the working groups were all in consensus that both regions have particular strengths in each and they identified specific areas of collaboration.

Dr. John Hepburn, Vice President of Research from UBC hosted the event along with co-host Dr. Robert Dynes, President of the University of California.  Dr. Arthur Carty, National Science Advisor of the Privy Council Office of Canada was the keynote speaker.

BC Delegation Visits San Diego

The Premier's Technology Council organized a delegation from British Columbia to visit San Diego from July 23-25, 2006 to learn about how San Diego developed its technology industry in a relatively short time frame and to identify barriers and key success factors needed in building a local cluster.

Eleven delegates from BC met with senior business leaders from San Diego to discuss the issues listed above.  The delegates were hosted by Steve Morley, VP of Technology of QUALCOMM which is one of the world's leading wireless technology firm.

The delegation also visited the Salk Institute which conducts world-class biological research under the guidance of 59 faculty investigators. It employs a scientific staff of more than 850, including visiting scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. The major areas of study are: Molecular Biology and Genetics; Neurosciences; and Plant Biology.

The Salk Institute consistently ranks among the leading research institutions in the world for its faculty’s contributions and the impact of their findings. The Institute has trained more than 2,000 scientists, many of whom have gone on to positions of leadership in other prominent research centers worldwide. Five scientists trained at the Institute have won Nobel prizes, and five current resident faculty members are Nobel Laureates.

BC Biotech and the BC Innovation Council are currently exploring colloboration opportunities between scientists.

Canada Export Centre Opens for BC Biotech Members

BC Biotech is pleased to announce that we are now authorized to extend access to the Canada Export Centre for qualified members.

The Canada Export Centre acts like a permanent export trade-show that exhibits and promotes Canadian companies’ products and services to foreign trade missions and other qualified international buyers, investors, distributors, agents, government representatives and joint venture partners from around the world - 12 months of the year. They also provide market intelligence and international market development services to Canadian companies.

BC Biotech is one of only 64 associations nationwide to qualify for the federal government’s PEMD Program to promote exports. The PEMD Program has just announced that it will financially support a finite number of BC Biotech member companies to participate in the Canada Export Centre by covering 50% of the fees and associated costs for up to three years.

There are other eligible associations and only a small number of spaces available, so we strongly encourage you take the time to analyze this opportunity before it disappears. Expect a call from the Canada Export Centre to determine if their services and your organization are well matched.

At BC Biotech, we are always working to maximize the value of your member-ship. Only through this partnership with PEMD and the Canada Export Centre are we able to bring you this extraordinary government funding opportunity.
