BC Biotech and Government of BC to Collaborate on International Marketing Efforts
With the biotech industry being one of an extremely global nature, promoting our strengths outside the province and country is paramount to our success. With the recent announcement of the discontinuation of Leading Edge British Columbia, BC Biotech is now working very closely with the BC Ministry of Economic Development to ensure we leverage the good work Leading Edge has done, and build upon it, as we believe that both Government and industry must play a key role in the international marketing of the sector. BC Biotech has in fact always played a very active role in this regard, and as the voice of the industry, will now work directly with the Ministry and our industry partners to ensure continued marketing of BC’s biotechnology industry.
The BC Government’s decision regarding Leading Edge BC should in no way be considered indicative of them reducing their commitment to the biotech sector in BC. This is in fact, an opportunity for the Government of BC to work more directly with industry associations such as BC Biotech, and further exemplify their commitment to the biotech sector. BC Biotech looks forward to now working even more closely with the government and our industry partners to ensure this happens.
We encourage all our members to read the following message from the Honourable Colin Hansen, Minister of Economic Development to this effect…
Minister's Message on New Approach to Marketing B.C. Technology
Over the past decade, the technology industry in British Columbia has expanded on average at three times the pace of the economy as a whole. With numerous success stories in every sector of the industry, the provincial government identified technology as a key industry for the future of the province. And we are committed to continue creating a climate in which our technology industries can flourish.
While Leading Edge BC made significant strides in meeting their goal of marketing B.C. technology-based opportunities, the government recognizes broadening the promotions of the technology industry is critical to its continued success. As a result, we determined it made the most sense to integrate Leading Edge BC into the Ministry of Economic Development.
As we continue to build on the strength of British Columbia’s economy, we know we must increase our marketing in Asia, Europe and the United States to capitalize on the opportunities in those regions and build on B.C.’s reputation as an international player. With the Ministry of Economic Development’s focus on the Asia Pacific and promoting all B.C. opportunities, it is logical to include technology in our promotions and market our province under one consistent brand.
The Province remains committed to continuing to raise the profile of B.C.'s high tech industry and we anticipate a seamless transition over the coming weeks and months as we move towards a more integrated approach and stronger relationship with our industry partners. We will build on our successes and promote British Columbia as a premier destination for technology investment, talent and opportunity around the world.
If you have any further questions about the international marketing activities of the Province of British Columbia please contact Todd Tessier, Director of International Capital Markets at (250) 217-9471 or todd.tessier@gov.bc.ca.
Yours truly,
Colin Hansen
