Mr. Joe Garcia - LifeSciences BC Secretary

Mr. Garcia is a member of the Biotechnology Group, part of the firm’s Technology, Communications and Intellectual Property Group and the Corporate Finance and M&A Group.
His practice involves acting for private and public corporations, underwriters and venture capitalists. He advises clients on venture capital financing, public financing, private placements and mergers and acquisitions. In addition, supported by his science education and technical training experience, Mr. Garcia provides practical advice relating to life sciences issues such as intellectual property protection, licensing, collaborative research arrangements, joint venture transactions, strategic alliances and general corporate matters including governance issues and shareholder agreements.
Prior to undertaking a career in law, Mr. Garcia worked in corporate finance with a national underwriter and in clinical research with a large pharmaceutical company.
Mr. Garcia received a BSc (Honors) in Pharmacology and Human Biology from the University of Toronto (1990), a BA in Economics (Health Care) from McMaster University (1993) and his LLB from the University of British Columbia (1996). Mr. Garcia was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1997 and joined the firm in 2003.
Mr. Garcia is a director and secretary of BC Biotech, founding director of the Student Biotechnology Network Society and is a director of Northern Lipids Inc. Joe is a member of the BioPartnering North America Conference Executive Committee and Chair of its Sponsorship Committee, a member of the Simon Fraser University Biotechnology Advisory Council and a member of several BC Biotech committees including the Finance Committee.
